April Showers in with great times at the Laugh Lounge…

For a very special party celebrating the birthday of Sandy Kaul, co-owner, the Lounge was transformed into an old speakeasy. Downstairs, the jokes were made by old friends and guests from around the country playing mock black jack and roulette at tables with live Salsa music performing. Food was catered by the scrumptous guys who are a partof the uber trendy, the Fat Radish of Orchard Street. While we did not have my favorite brussel sprout and bacon, the pulled pork and fish sliders were all the rave. Heard that Sting’s daughters is a part owner and I am not sure if that is the same one that frequently plays in a band at my favorite night spot, Pianos.

Late night party guests got a show to see Tony Woods play the role of dealer to a high stakes Black Jack tournament with chocolate gelt and poker chips from Economy Candy Store. Hadn’t laughed so hard in a long time.

Leaping Forward with In Living Color Auditions

Comedy has always been in my life and one of my favorite sketch shows has been “In Living Color” (along with The Carol Burnett Show, “El Chapulin” and old SNL.) So, when I heard Keenan Wayans was looking to scout some local comics for a remake of the iconic show, I was honored to partner with Burt Smooth to put together a couple of showcases at the Laugh Lounge. For three nights, some of the areas best and most talented comics performed live auditions that featured countless original characters (and a few stereotypes.)

Happy to recommend house regulars and old friends like Ruperto Vanderpool, Imagine and Kyle Grooms who all made it look too easy to whip the audience into a frenzy Thursday night. The next night, Yannis Pappa’s Mauritzia character proved to already have a strong following.  Rob Stapleton ripped the audience as only a verteran can. While it was my first time seeing Pretty Ricky Fontaine and Thomas Dale, I hope to add them to my mix.

Saturday night, the final audition was added at the last minute.  Ester Ku was adorable in her ski pants and began by pretendng to have a thick Korean accent. She so silly. Later, Clipperman’s gay character was a show stealer and Nema Williams also gave them a run for the money.  So, it will be interesting to see who gets picked.  If I hear anything, I’ll let you know.

With this unseasonably warm weather, I’ve been venturing out a bit more. Last week, tried the Gentleman Farmer on Rivington off Allen Street.  The 20-seat place had gotten rave reviews and was quite delish.  It will be added  to my new favorites.  Also liked they had a sense of humor. Their choking sign caught my eye giving me a chuckle. Nice they shared the website where they found it so I can get my very own for the Laugh Lounge.

Also gave a shot to the new Little Muenster restaurant on Stanton Street. If you like grilled cheese variations and will not request any substitutions, this is good cheap date.

I was saddened to learn the Moldy Fig Jazz club did not make it it. Finishing up early the other night, I walked past Clinton Street.   It took me a moment to read the Marshal’s sign, it was for rent.  It was a bummer because it was a cool spot to hear mellow live music. Felt a little pang as I mourned the death of a neighboring business I enjoyed. Then, I thought, “I liked the bar chairs, maybe they’d be willing to sell them to me?” That way, I could Jazz up the Lounge and keep a small spirit of their’s alive.  Not a bad idea!

Tomorrow is Leap Year day and I’m off at night, maybe I’ll find a new fun spot.

Laughing on the Lower East Side…

Weekend shows at the Laugh Lounge have been selling out with the warmer weather. Can’t complain that we have seen little snow this year. Makes it is easier to head out late night and enjoy the night life. Last week, Tony Woods came out to play to the Happy Ending, dancing into the wee hours. Oh, he’d probably deny that he is a dancer but he was definitely getting his groove on following his performance at the Aqueduct Casino. Friday night, Donnell Rawlings came out to play. It has been years since I’ve had the plesure to party with them both at the Laugh Lounge.

While I had hoped that 2012 would bring only good news, I am sorry to hear comic Todd Lynn passed after diminishing health in recent years. Todd was a good friend to Marc Theobald and Dean Edwards. My condolances to all his family and friends.

On a lighter note, there are a few new additions to the neighborhood for the foodies. Sauce, on Rivington Street, has lots of grass fed meats and fresh pastas. I couldn’t cheat on The Meat Ball Shop, so I favored the meat sauce. While it tends to get packed, I’d eat there again and am adding it to my repetoir. It is hard to get a new one on the list sometimes because I obsess with favorites. Right now I am crazy about the fish tacos at Yerba Buena. Never thought I’d like fried fish and zesty cole slaw. Yumm! Still I’ll continue to try to find some new good places.

Taking a few nights off to visit my mother land, Puerto Rico. Let’s see if I am feeling lucky because I plan on hitting roulette table. Can’t wait…

Remembering Patrice O’Neal…

Monday, December 5 the New York comic community mourned and celebrated the (too) short life of the uncompromising and witty, former football star. In a packed church his friends and colleagues shared some of their most memorable experiences. Many of the crew I remember sitting at the back table at the Comedy Cellar. Jim Norton, Robert Kelly, Rich Vos, Kevin Hart and Colin Quinn all touched the audience with personal memories. There were even a few applause breaks as he light heartedness felt a little like a Comedy Central Roast. Afterwards, friends shared more O’Neal stories.

Back in 2002 when I was raising money to open the Laugh Lounge, I used to drop in the big guy. He liked telling me Puerto Rican jokes to catch my ire. He enjoyed dishing it out and respected you if you could give it back.

The last time Patrice hosted Burt Smooth’s show he pulled me aside and told me, “We used to sit around that table at the Cellar and laugh at you when you told us that you’d open your own club,” he’d grin. Then, after a comedic pause, he added, “I’m proud of you.”

Gina Savage, formerly of the old Boston Comedy club also had a good one. She said that she had bumped into Patrice in Vegas a few years ago at one of the clubs. He told her, “You used to be a ten but you are still an eight!” I disagree, she is still a ten and has a great sense of humor to boot. That is the type of brutal honesty we all came to love!

Thanksgiving is approaching…

I have lots to be grateful for as audiences are creeping back to the Laugh Lounge. It may be a sign that everyone needs a laugh during these tense Occupy Wall Street times in New York City and around the country.

Had the pleasure of visitting San Francisco (I’m told no one out there really says, ‘San Fran’ or ‘S F’) last week and got to witness their movement so I was happy to chat it up with Lee Camp. Lee may have the distinguishing honor of having done comedy for the most OWS protests with 14 appearances at various events. His most thrilling was here during the first few days. My experience by the Bay was a little disheartening as it felt more like a homeless encampment instead of a political protest.

Had wanted to check out the great Marc Maron in Cali (not sure if that is out now too.) But, instead was complelled to check out Yoshi’s for some live Jazz. Hip-hop.com people were so welcoming and had me out to see former D’Angelo backup singer gone solo artist, Anthony Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton put on quite a show as front man while his back up singers amused me and brought a smile to my face. Can see how people can leave their heart in San Francisco.

Back home on the LES (an yes, we all say LES) great to report that Mr. Mark Vierra finally will be shooting his own Showtime special and has worked out a deal with FOX. Word is that funny man George Lopez may even have a hand in it. Will definitely look to check out my Bronx Brother.

Also checked out the second neighborhood plce to have a “secret back wall.” While not as swanky as the hot Beauty and Essex, new comer Sons of Essex, formerly Mson Dixon, is a handsome spot. Last night there were more blond beauties than I could through a stick at. While my late appetizer was just fare, I’d put the place on my “cocktails only” list because there is good people watching. Thrilled they gave up that old country music theme too!

Been too long since I had been at Ten Bells on Broome Street. Msr Fifi, formerly of Le Pere Pinard, expanded his lovely wine bar adding a family style private room in the back. The music is always good and once I get a wiff of the chorizo, I’m having another glass of wine.

Hope the turkey is tender and the sides are sweet!

Fall is blooming in the Lower East Side…

…and comics are flourishing.  I was happy to see Cory Fernandez glowing the other night at the Laugh Lounge and sensed he had good news to share.  Indeed, he was beaming because the young film school graduate and talented comic was just cast in an HBO pilot, “The Brick”, directed by the amazing Spike Lee.  The show will be set in Jersey and the buzz is it is going for ”The Wire” meets “Entourage”.  HBO has been smacking it out of the park lately with shows like “Broadwalk Empire”  (Speaking of the Atlantic City drama, big shout out to actor and comic, Michael Kenneth Williams, aka Chalky White, who is tearing it up.  
The show has also featured a smaller role for fellow comic Howard Feller, both have graced my little stage.)   Will definitely be watching and supporting! 

Also hyped to hear that Victor Cruz will be joing the cast of Blue Bloods on CBS starring Tom Selleck.  Victor has been blowing up on commercials lately.   Now, the hard working actor is on television…couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.  He used to have a show at the Laugh Lounge.  A couple of years ago, Cruz even proposed to his lovely wife during a live sketch show!

Speaking of shows in New York,  Conan staff writer Laurie Kilmartin will be hitting the stage at the Laugh Lounge for a set November 2.  Laurie will be in town with the whole  Conan crew as he will be filming in the Big Apple live.  Kilmartin has a sharp wit, truly a comic’s comic. While I’d love you to catch her at my home, she is such a great jokester that I’d recommend seeing her anywhere. 

Later this month, the Laugh Lounge is hosting two charitable events that I am proud of.  On October 22nd, Tom Ragu presents “Sorry, we’re funny” at 6:30pm.  The show benefits Natasha’s Justice Project, a non profit seeking to end the backlog of rape kits across the country through funding, education and advocacy.   The show will be headlined by house favorite, Vanessa Hollingshead.  There is also the Neighborhood’s school clean comedy  show set for October 14 at 6:30pm.   

In addition to hosting comedy shows for good causes.  It is fun to support local night life businesses in the ‘hood.  Following the closing of The Slipper room, some area shows were displaced.  One of their burlesque shows ended up at Casa Mezcal on Orchard Street.  I checked out the fun show last week  and I laughed my ass off.  Who knew girls could make those pasty tassles twirl like that?  Quite a show.

Last night, I finally visitted  the Moldy Fig Jazz club on Stanton Street.  Great to hear accoustic live Jazz just streets away.  What a treat.   The staff was warm and the music was cool.  RomeNeal, who is doing his one man show on jazz  legend Thelonious Monk on Monday night called “Monk”, was a sweetheart.  I thought he was kidding when he offered me some delicious bananna pudding.  But, he was serious… How could I say, “No?”  Smooth music, sweets and wine, I was in heaven!  Next time, I might even bring a date to cuddle on the cozy couches!

Survived the Summer…

Comedy crowds are coming back for laughs on the Lower East Side following a rough summer. This last weekend felt back to normal after weeks. The Laugh Lounge experienced its first ever rolling black out in late August that was followed by the small earthquake and hurricance. The subsequent “terror alerts” ahead of the anniversary of the September 11 attacks also slowed business. But, after weathering it all, New Yorkers and tourists maintained a good sense of humor.

Good news from two of the nicest people in comedy. Greer Barnes is working on an Off Broadway Play ahead of his African Tour. While he’s only doing a limited engagement, I have to check it out and support a brother! Jessica Wood also got a nice role acting in an upcoming HBO movie about Phil Spector and she gets to act with the amazing Susan Sarandon. So, I’ll keep a lookout for the air date.

Our own, Jeffrey Hernandez of Hard Knocks Laughs produced his first music video starring his personality Gay Z. And, the single will be available on itunes shortly. Scenes were shot through out the city and at our very own lounge with guest appearances by lots of the Laugh Lounge family including Burt Smooth. Hey, if Gay Z becomes a Youtube sensation like Maritizia, it will be great for Hernandez’s weekly show!

Speaking of the extended family here, I am happy that Ahmed Rodriguez will be bringing his Power Is Industry showcase to the Laugh Lounge. I have heard nothing but great things and hope to see for myself. Ahmed will also be producing his own flavor comedy showcase in the future. So, I am wishing him lots of success!

In October, Paid or Pain, the new Jay Nog comedy/burlesque show deputs. Following in the tradition of Vivisection, I think this show will be a fun addition to the monthly calendar.

The Lower East Side continues to sizzle and last night’s sold out shows had audiences in hysterics.  Favorites Tony Woods, Ted Alexandro, Mark Viera and Mike Yard took the stage by storm and the energy was electric.  Friday night had great audiences too in spite of the torrential rains because everyone needs a good laugh these days.

A few new shows are being added to the Laugh Lounge’s roster.   First, I am thrilled to be working with Blahzay and Dave Mathis’ Edgewood Films to produce a new bi-monthly sketch show called Monday Madness. The new addition will feature live sketch and improv by a cast of regulars including Omar Thomson, Dino Vigo and Hard Knock Laugh’s Jeffrey Hernandez. It launches on Aug. 29th and will also serve up hot music and beautiful people.  It’s like In Living Color and Chappelle show had a baby and my hope is that other comics will guest in the future.  I’ve always wanted a fun sketch show in the mix! 

In September, I’ll be looking forward to see who is the funniest lawyer in town as Alex Barnett showcases Comedians at Law. Alex is  also expecting his first child so I am wishing the proud papa all the best.

 The neighborhood remains hot despite closing of  the Mason Dixon Bar and the temporary shut down of Welcome to the Johnsons. I was never big on mechanical bull rides. But, a good dive bar will always be missed. Just met the guys at the Moldy Fig Jazz club offering nightly jam sessions on Stanton St.  Will have to drop in one night to check out the sound.   Also visitted  the Hotel Chantel on Ludlow St. that is not really a hotel. \ Love the roof top bar with views of the Williamsberg Bridge.

At Laugh LoungeVulcanis Levi’s fashion, fettish and burlesque show, Vivisection, continues to blossom and was recently featured in the New York Press. Already, V is booking his next event scheduled for Oct. 5. Thought it would be a nice lead in to the Paid or Pain show that will debut at Laugh Lounge on Oct. 20 hosted by Jay Nog.

Life is short so we all need to laugh a lot more!

Summer is officially here

The comedy community is still reeling from the loss of Mia Yard. On May 18th many mourned her alongside her husband, Mike Yard , her mother, family and friends. Mia was an amazing women. She was talented, beautiful and amazingly successful at whatever she did and she will be missed.

I was also sad that I missed Ruperto Vanderpool’s Barberia off Broadway. Following 150 shows, news is that the play may be headed for a national tour. So, I may yet see it live.

I got to celebrate my birthday with Donnell Rawlings and Dawn B at my local favorite Piano Bar around the corner on Ludlow Street. Donnell was here filming a pilot and I think it will be picked up. New York could use another show being produced here. What’s more, I love having from Ashy to Classy home. Btw, his new line of luxury creams are fabulous.

Kudos to Mother F- With a Hat for getting nods for the Tonys. I did tell you Yule was great!

Spring is in the air…

After a very long, snowy winter Spring is officially here. Just after the Valentine’s day weekend Comix officially closed it’s doors in the meatpacking district. While it is sad that comics and staff lost jobs, I’m hoping that some of them will head down to the LES and visit. The nightlife is great and the drinks and food are cheaper. My late night favorite is having meatballs around the corner at The Meatball shop that serves until 2am on weeknights and 4am on Friday and Saturday nights. For a trendier and expensive martini surrounded by beautiful people check out the new Beauty and Essex restaraunt across the street that was opened by Dos Santos of Stanton Social fame.

Speaking of fame, just checked out the new play The Mother F**ker with the Hat debutting Chris Rock on Broadway. Yul Vazquez stole the scenes and commanded laughter for simply crossing his legs. Annabella Sciorra and Bobby Cannavale also pulled off Puerto Rican quite well!

Still I need to check out Ruperto Vanderpool in La Barberia and John Leguzamo’s one man show in the weeks ahead.

Weatherman says it could snow again tomorrow proving that Mother Nature has a sense of humor…
